Ladies Love Corsets

My ArtFire store has officially gone online today.
I'm very pleased with it although my avatar still needs a lot of work.
First things first though and that's listing several styles of corset storage bags.
Watch for them soon.

Something completely different

I got stuck with the flu so even thou the supplies I needed came in I'm not working on M's corset right now. I couldn't sew a straight line if my life depended on it.

So here's someone for you to look at while I try to get well.

Corset storage bag

While waiting on supplies to continue with M's corset I decided to tackle a new project.
A new corset storage bag, not the simple bags I've created up to now but something special and esthetically pleasing.
It's made of high quality black satin with a soft cotton lining. I've put piping along the circular edges, a hidden zipper and functional lacing.

I had intended to put the bag on Etsy until I found out you need a credit card to open a store. Are you kidding me? A credit card? Do you have any idea how many people choose not to own a credit card because they don't want the ability to spend money they don't have?

Guess I'll be keeping this beauty for myself.

Update commissie korset / commissioned corset

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Time for an update.
M (my customer) wants a black satin corset with a little print on it.
Black satin with a print? Can't find it. I got inspired by corsets with lace over the panels but I wanted to do something original for M.
So I chose organza, remind me to never use organza in combination with satin again. Two slippery fabrics combined = headache.
But.... it does give a nice effect if I do say so myself.

Vertaling / Translation

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally, it's about time....
I've just finished translating all my posts, I have quite a number of English speaking friends who would also like to read what I'm working on. And I had it up to here with getting browbeaten over the fact I wasn't blogging in English.
So here you go.

Nieuw speelgoed / New toy

--------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm over the moon, the postman was just here with a little package, the new zipper foot for my Singer.
Now the hunt is on for a hemming foot.

Mock-up

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Yesterday the mock-up of the corset was done and a friend helped me with the fitting. That really wouldn't have worked if I had been on my own. It's obvious I put the bust line about 3 centimeters to high, the waist line is perfect and the hip line is almost perfect. The back hip fits great the front has way to much room.
Back to the drawing table.

Patroon is eindelijk vergroot / finally enlarged

--------------------------------------------------------------------

My 3d update today, I'm on a roll.
I finally finished drawing out the large version of the miniature corset and to my surprise I have enough fabric to keep to the same color combo and I did with the miniature.
The pattern parts have already been cut so I can continue with them tonight.

Commissie korset / Commisioned corset

--------------------------------------------------------------------
My customer gave permission to keep a record of the construction of her corset here.
A while back she test fitted the mock-up, I made some adjustments on it and now I'm working on the actual corset.
Yes, the busk sticks out a little at the top but there's a reason for it which you'll find out later.
The muck-up:

--------------------------------------------------------------------

The corset will be black and hmm ... oops. I made a mistake with sewing in the waist tape.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Well the waist tape issue is fixed and the boning tape with boning is in place. It's coming along nicely.

Naaimachine / Sewing machine

Serie nummer: 12354718

--------------------------------------------------------------------

I sometimes get the question what kind of sewing machine I use.
Well that's a Singer, now you may thing that's a good brand, modern, has a lot of options.
On 2 of the 3 counts you're wrong, obviously it's a good brand but it's far from modern and has absolutely no options.
My Singer is model 28, production year 1894.
That's no type-o it really is from 1894. Try looking up the serial number here.
Serial number: 12354718

Welke machine gebruik jij?
Which machine do you use?

Bijna klaar / Almost done

--------------------------------------------------------------------

It isn't easy tying a miniature corset to a miniature pillow but I think I did ok. Now all I need to do is figure out what to use as eyelets but that's something for the future.

Maskers / Masks

A while back I posted a picture of the corset and dress I made for the masked ball.
Today it's the masks.
supplies: 2 blank masks, 1 feather boa, paint, a few stick on sparklies and inspiration.

Miniatuur / Miniature

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Yesterday I busted my knee again so I could do little more then sit, sit and sit some more. I've had 2 days to work on the miniature corset and I can tell you one thing, it's a lot of work. I just thought I could sew the nylon boning in (see my last post) but that didn't work because I wanted to put fake boning channels on the outside. Those turned into real boning channels, 24 in total. The corset is more purple then white now but I like the effect and I've learned a lot from it. Like the fact it may be prudent to pre-sew the boning channels that don't run over a seem before I put the pattern pieces together. Tomorrow the last of the boning is going in and some finishing touches, I can hardly wait to have a finished product.

If you like it (or not) or if you have any pointers, please leave a message.

Nieuwe hobby? / New hobby?

--------------------------------------------------------------------

I got a bit frustrated with drawing the pattern yesterday and I really needed to do something els. There wasn't any semi finished corset I could continue on and my customer wasn't due until 8PM. I started wonder if I can sew something really small.
Well here's the result, the start of a miniature corset. Size, not a clue but it's smaller then an A4 sheet of paper. Now I really don't know where I can get a miniature opening busk so I left the 2 front panels attached to each other. Meanwhile I've got all the panels sewn together and I even have some nylon boning in place.
I may tackle more of these projects in the future.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a lot more difficult then I had hoped but the conversion is going in the right direction. The first picture shows where I put the bust, waist and hip lines. Then I calculated the percentage and jutted down the measurement. I haven't done this many calculations in years. But I'm not finished with just the small pattern, I want it in my own size. Next step is a true sized grid with enough space between the anchor lines to draw out the pattern. Picture number 2 is that grid again with the percentages and my corresponding measurements plus the markings on the horizontal grid lines of where each measurement belongs. (yes the picture is a bit fuzzy on purpose, you don't need to know my measurements ;-p)
And now I'm getting nervous, I have to draw the pattern.

Waar werk ik momenteel aan... / What I'm working on...

--------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm working on 5 corsets at the moment, yes that right 5 corsets.

The first is a corset for a customer, She'll be coming in tomorrow to test fit the muck-up and if all is well I can get to work on "the real thing".
I have a muck-up cincher for myself and a muck-up of a pattern I bought recently.
But there's more, much more. A while ago I learned how to alter an antique pattern to my own size and body shape. I found 2 patterns that appealed to me. The picture shows one of those patterns, this "diagram" fits on an A4 sheet of paper and I'm definitely not that small so now I'm going to have to rework it to my own size.
Who ever said you won't be using math after you're done with your education?

Zwart korset / Black corset

--------------------------------------------------------------------

December 2009 I would be going to a masked ball with a friend. I had a little over a month to create 2 dresses, 2 corsets and 2 masks. I had no idea of the stress I was getting myself into. The picture is of my own outfit, a black under-bust corset on a red dress. The nice thing about this corset pattern is next time I can add cups and create an over-bust corset.

Middeleeuws korset - bodywarmer / Medieval corset - body warmer

--------------------------------------------------------------------

One of my first "corset" projects.
I'm an archer, yes bow and arrows at an archery range. It's a great sport but a bit cold at this time of year. I needed a body warmer but I also needed something to keep my cloths away from my bowstring. All the body warmers I looked at were just to bulky and got in the way. So I made one myself, I took a medieval corset pattern, adjusted it to have a more enclosed and higher neckline and this is the result.

Waarom? / Why?

Waarom ben ook ik een blog begonnen?
Eigenlijk heel simpel, ik verveel me.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Why did I start a blog?
Simply put, I'm bored. Just kidding, I needed a place to showcase my projects.
I make corsets as a hobby and on commission and I thought it was a nice idea to keep a visual record.
I'll be updating infrequently as a good custom corset usually takes me between 20 and 50 hours to make and I do have other things to do.
